Kurdish culture and identity

Christine Allison, G. Kreyenbroek, 著KreyenbroekPhilipG.

While Saddam Hussein's persecution of the Kurd's and his military attacks on them have drawn world attention to the political plight of the Middle East's largest ethnic minority, much less is known of their culture. This volume seeks to remedy this gap. Its contributors, who include both leading Western and Kurdish scholars, provide overviews and some detailed examinations of various dimensions of Kurdish culture and its historical underpinnings. Making clear the differences that exist in a community that is spread across four countries in the region - Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Syria - and recognizing that Kurdish culture is in the process of change, successive chapters look at Kurdistan's written literature as well as its oral tradition, material culture including textiles and costume, and religion.
