The move by international development agencies to a primary or exclusive focus on poverty reduction is one of the most significant shifts in development policy of the last half-century and yet we still know little about what the 'new poverty strategies' have achieved. This collection of evaluative essays introduces a number of new analytical techniques and examines several dimensions of poverty and anti-poverty efforts, including change over time, intra-household relations and the influence of international economic policy. Whilst there has been considerable progress in poverty reduction, many areas have been hindered by inequality, civil conflict, insititutional gaps and turbulence in the international financial system. The New Poverty Strategies proposes a range of new policies and donor initiatives intended to achieve greater success in achieving a pro-poor pattern of growth in the new century. These include extensions of existing initiatives in microfinance, agricultural development and reforms of government and international financial architecture in both North and South.
